Skyla Solomon is a new rising artist. Her singing has captivated the hearts of those who heard her. Her recordings have received many positive reviews from all over the world. But her talent lies not only in singing but also in her ability to flourish in spite of the difficult trials she has had to face.
Life has not been kind to Skyla. Born in Laguna Beach, California in 1991, she was no stranger to domestic violence. "I have glimpses of ambulances coming to our house, leaving with my mom on a stretcher... Periodically, Ruben [stepfather] would go to jail for a few months," says Skyla. "I can't even tell you how many times I dialed the number 9-1-1." Ever since her mother married her step-father Ruben when Skyla was 4, she grew up with her blood-father rarely in the picture. "I don't remember seeing him that often," she remembers.
Growing up in that abusive environment, Skyla found her refuge in one thing: singing. "I always sang! Even when I was really small, I used to sing random words into a microphone that was never plugged in," recalls Skyla, "Singing tuned out the bad things and made me feel good." She vividly remembers when the family purchased a Karaoke machine. Skyla's mother, an RCA Recording Label candidate herself, taught her much about vocals. They sang together all the time, often on the family Karaoke machine, a dearly loved childhood treasure for Skyla. Unfortunatlye, cruelty was not about to give up on Skyla.
On November 29th, 2002, Skyla's step-father Ruben was shot and killed. Mourning and lost, she and her mother moved to Oregon seeking a new star. There, Skyla's mother soon remarried. In the midst of such uncertainty and rapid changes, Skyla went into clinical depression at the age of 16. Skyla remembers "some dark memories" of that time. Despite the odds, Skyla regained her footing after she decided to join Musical Theater. There, she reconnected to the music that supported her in her childhood. She leanred how to write songs, channel emotion and perform on stage. This turned Skyla's life around.
At 17, Skyla joined Battered Person's Advocacy, an organization that supports victims of domestic violence. She organized a 3-mile walk and worked to involve her community. "I had t-shirts, flyers, banners and was given permission to use my high school track for the walk," says Skyla. The 3-mile walk grabbed the attention of local news and the crews flooded the day of the event. The follow morning, it was a frontpage article.
Empowered by her success and invigorated by a new-found purpose, she continued to serve by joining Miss Douglas County Teen Beauty Pageant where she used her musical talent to raise funds for chairty. She raised a record-breaking $3,000 and was the first runner-up. Later she was asked to perform at an Annual Art's Assembly where she performed Taylor Swift's Love Story. It wasn't long after that Skyla and her family moved back to Orange County where her passion for music would shine even further. She continued to be active and energetic, even audition for Twilight: New Moon and American Idol.
In January 2011, Skyla Solomon signed with L5studio Management with whom she hopes to launch her musical career. "Music has always been very important to me. I want my listeners to experience the same uplift that music gave me," says Skyla. Her single "Open Road" is due out in January along with a number of appearances. |
